About American Legion Auxiliary
Founded in 1919, The American Legion Auxiliary has nearly 1 million members from all walks of life. The Auxiliary administers hundreds of volunteer programs, gives tens of thousands of hours to its communities and to veterans, and raises millions of dollars to support its own programs, as well as other worthwhile charities familiar to Americans. It is all accomplished with volunteers.
Although we were originally organized to assist The American Legion, the Auxiliary has achieved its own unique identity while working side-by-side with the veterans who belong to The American Legion. Like the Legion, the Auxiliary’s interests have broadened to encompass the entire community. One program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Department of California is California Girls State.
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. Through its nearly 10,500 units located in every state and some foreign countries, the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with The American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals.
The local American Legion Auxiliary Unit 165 supports Fisher Houses located at Travis AFB, the Oncology unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) at Travis AFB, assists with the annual free holiday dinners for the community, programs for local high school students, and other such programs to assist both veterans and our community.

The American Legion Auxiliary 165 accepts all those who:
(1) grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion; or
(2) grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who served in either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918 and any time after December 7, 1941 who, being a citizen of the United States at the time of their entry therein served on active duty in the Armed Forces of any of the governments associated with the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge; or
(3) grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who were in the Armed Forces of the United States during either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to November 11, 1918; and any time after December 7, 1941 who served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge; or
(4) to those women who of their own right are eligible for membership in The American Legion.
Annual membership dues are $30, less than one cup of coffee per month at Denny’s Restaurant. Lifetime membership is based on your age at the time you apply and the dues rate for your Unit. For example, if you are 72 years of age and your Unit’s annual dues are $30, you would pay $457. If you are 50 years of age you would pay $787.
Unit 165 provides meals twice a year to the Fisher Houses located at Travis AFB, provides healthy snacks and beverages to patients at the Neurology/Neuro Surgery Unit at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) at Travis AFB, assists with the annual free holiday dinners for the community, provides scholarships to local high school students, and other such programs to assist both veterans and our community.
In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.
The American Legion strengthens our communities, states and nation with programs and services for our veterans, the military and their families.
As you can see the missions overlap but the organizations are completely separate entities that work together for veterans and their families.
The American Legion Auxiliary supports veterans, military families, and the local community by running programs that feed neighbors, aid homeless veterans, provide scholarships and student opportunities, promote patriotism, and strengthen community engagement.
The Auxiliary does have scholarships for our young people.
As much as you are willing and able to commit. We meet monthly and hold several events throughout the year that we would welcome you to participate in.
You do not, but we can use your help in other ways if you would like to volunteer for other activities.
You can transfer to another Unit and we would be happy to help you with the process.
